What data source is used for the Market Sizing Toolkit? |
The Market Sizing Toolkit currently offers a cleaner version of BoldData to ensure business counts are more accurate and reflect businesses a company would be able to sell into. BoldData is comparable to D&B (Dunn & Bradstreet) which has 40k sources globally, however aggregates additional data providers and online sources. D&B is the world’s largest provider of business firmographic data and BoldData licenses key information for aggregation.
Helix also has access to ZoomInfo (in addition to other datasets) which can be requested to help serve requests where BoldData is not suitable. Other assets will be integrated in the future. |

What are the licensing terms for sharing data? |
Our module’s data providers allow the following permitted use cases:
|
|
Why do the sources contain different values? E.g. number of businesses for an industry? |
Different datasets have different intended use cases. The methodology the US Census uses for collecting and counting businesses is vastly different than what BoldData or most data aggregators do. BoldData is collected for a specific operating location of a legal business entity. US Census data is intended to be used to understand general business climate and industry/demographics in the workplace. It is challenging to align the different values across datasets as they have differing methodologies. |
|
Which source should I use for my analysis? |
The recommended approach is to combine insights from multiple datasets. The Helix team is working on a hierarchy of data sources by use case. |
|
Can I get access to more than 50k records? |
Yes, the 50k record limit is designed to cover most use cases and to prevent accidentally pulling more data than is required. Please contact GlobalHelixInsights@Bain.com with your request. |
|
How reliable is the estimated number of employees and revenue data? |
Most employee and revenue data are modelled by BoldData and should be viewed as directional. |
|
Can I search by NAICS industries instead of SIC? |
Unfortunately, only SIC is included in the Market Sizing Toolkit at this time. However, Helix has created the Industry Taxonomy Explorer to convert between NAICS and SIC industries https://helixinsights.baintools.com/#/industry_taxonomy_explorer.
Helix separately has access to ZoomInfo which includes NAICS industry codes and is very useful where companies have >50 FTEs. ZoomInfo data can be provided on request and it will be integrated into the next major release. |

What are the data field definitions included in the extract? |
Sample data field definitions are below. Please contact GlobalHelixInsights@Bain.com for additional queries:
